  1. This photo was part of a photo set in the LIFE archive called "Conscientious Objectors Camp." During World War II, men who refused to serve in the military for religious reasons (and that was the only accepted excuse) were housed in conscientious objectors camps like this one, and they were put to work doing things like building dams, irrigation projects, and Forest Service trails. -Larry
