Don Tonry was a US Olympic gymnast in 1960, and coached gymnastics first at West Point and then at Yale for 43 years. On Oct. 17th I published a yellowed photo of a muscular nude young man in a page from a scrap book that someone was selling online. An observant Free Turtle posted in the comments that this was a photo by Lon of New York of Olympian Don Tonry. It's the only frontal nude I could find online other than some bad obvious fakes, and probably was purchased privately by the original owner before male nude photography was considered legal and legitimate. Despite a long career ending with his retirement from Yale in 2005 (his wife headed the Women's Gymnastics program at Yale right up until her death this past July 21st.) Don suffered from multiple sclerosis which robbed him of his physical abilities much of his adult life. He died in 2013 at the age of 77. The last picture in this series is the original photo. There's plenty more to learn about Don and about Lon of New York and his struggles with the law if you want to go down the google rabbit hole further.
