More "posture study" photos of incoming Yale freshmen recently sold on eBay. Both men and women at Ivy League schools were subjected to this for years, in the name of pseudo-science tinged with eugenics. For those curious to know more about this click the link below the photos.
Number 2 is quite the looker, but number 3 is more my size. I'm somewhat sad this practice ended before my days at New Haven!
ReplyDeleteYou must have visited the Payne Whitney Gymnasium where this took place. What's it like?
DeleteIt's an old building, but has been updated and expanded quite a bit over the years. To be honest, it wasn't one of my on campus "haunts." However, if naked swimming was still practiced as I was in the "old days", I might have gone to the gym more often. Love the right bodies in these old posture pics. I imagine there were many "secret" perusal of the photos by some in the administration. FYI, Yale and the other Ivies and Seven Sisters all had eugenics studies back then.
DeleteThanks for your insight, Andrew.
DeleteI'm sure that who ever started this study was more interested in seeing naked men than some academic research. I certainly can't blame them. The photographer must have really enjoyed his task. I know that I would have.
ReplyDeleteGerald, that was my thought as well! The whole exercise of "posture photos" seems like nothing more than a way that college administrators and faculty could "ethically" satisfy their prurient interests. That being said, I very much enjoy these photos!!
DeleteHe certainly wasn't critical wit focusing...
