Chuck Eisenmann (1918-2010,) photographed with his dog London while manager of The Kearny Irishmen in 1955. London often entertained the crowd with tricks taught by Chuck. Photos by Loomis Dean for Life Magazine. Eisenman went on to a long career training London and other stand-in German Shepherds for movie and TV roles, and releasing books and an LP record on dog training. These photos are from the Life Magazine archives and the ones including Chuck showering naked with the dog presumably were not printed. Link to more info below.

There are literally hundreds of frontal male nudes in the LIFE Archive, none of which were printed in the full format taken. Some were cropped and used in the magazine, while others were not. The subjects of the photos were told that their privates would be cropped out if a nude picture was used, and that was true as far as it went. What they weren't told was that all the images would go into an archive that would be accessible on a thing called the internet decades later.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that even the photographers themselves could have known.
DeleteRight, they couldn't have known about the internet, but they might have known that LIFE was keeping an archive.
DeletePhotos of the dog on the playing field were published in an article in the July 25, 1955 issue of LIFE. The shower photos were not published. -Larry
ReplyDeleteThe things a guy has to do to get a dog washed.
ReplyDeleteLife magazine would have really been great IF they had published these photos. It was a good magazine, but if the public would have been accepting of such photos, then our society would have been so much better. That Life's photographers took these pictures indicates a very interesting interest!!! Lucky fellows!!!!
