June 18th, 1886 is the birthday of English mountaineer George Mallory. His disappearance on that mountain in 1924 became one of the most celebrated mysteries of the 20th century. Mallory's body was discovered in 1999, though it is unknown if he reached the summit of Everest before dying. Thanks to tar-mairo1986 for posting these on the ClassicMale subreddit.

ReplyDeleteIn April and May 1942 the US deployed troops to the islands as a front line defense against Japan eventually growing to a force of 50,000 men.(Japan never occupied the New Hebrides) Later up to 400,000 men were based and passed through the islands.The Hebrides became a major air and navy base for US war operations.
The New Hebrides is now known as Vanuatu.
