Pointing to a recon flying boat as it passes over, the aircrew enjoying the full view below.:) In April and May 1942 the US deployed troops to the islands as a front line defense against Japan eventually growing to a force of 50,000 men.(Japan never occupied the New Hebrides) Later up to 400,000 men were based and passed through the islands.The Hebrides became a major air and navy base for US war operations.
